Installation guide.

For technical installers, care home maintenance staff, and homeowners who want the full reference. Family-facing five-step setup is at /how-it-works.

Mount specifications

  • Hardware. Two #6 wood screws into ceiling joist, plaster anchor for non-joist install. Damage-free 3M Command-class adhesive mount included.
  • Ceiling height. 2.4 to 3.0 m for standard rooms. Up to 3.2 m supported for vaulted ceilings; consult spec table for cone geometry above 3.0 m.
  • Orientation. Sensor faces directly down. The LED indicator faces the room.
  • Position. Center of room is the default. For rectangular rooms longer than 6 m, use two sensors with overlapping cones near the long-axis midpoints.

Power

  • USB-C. 5V / 1A minimum. Standard 1.5 m cable shipped; 3 m and 5 m cables available as add-ons.
  • Battery. Lithium primary cell, non-rechargeable, 12+ months under typical room use. Replacement cells ship via the support portal.

Sensor placement relative to furniture

  • Do not mount over a bed with a tall upholstered headboard blocking the line of sight. The headboard occludes the bed's far half from the cone.
  • Do not mount directly over a bookshelf taller than 1.8 m. The shelf produces a constant non-human radar reflection that complicates calibration.
  • Avoid placement directly above large planters with daily watering. Wet foliage produces day-to-day variability in the reflection map.
  • Light fixtures, fans, smoke detectors, and HVAC vents are fine. The radar penetrates them.

Network configuration

  • Gateway. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (WPA2 or WPA3). 5 GHz is supported but not required.
  • Sensor-to-gateway radio. 802.15.4-class. Range under typical home wall conditions: approximately 15 m with one wall between sensor and gateway.
  • Mesh. If your facility has Wi-Fi mesh, place the gateway near the strongest node. The sensor radio does not bridge through your Wi-Fi mesh; it talks directly to the gateway.
  • Firewall. Outbound HTTPS to api.wellytic.example (TBD final domain). No inbound ports required.

App pairing

  1. Open the Wellytic app, iOS or Android.
  2. Create the household. The first phone becomes the household admin.
  3. Plug in the gateway. Wait 30 seconds for the LED to settle.
  4. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the gateway. The app guides Wi-Fi setup.
  5. Add each sensor. Bring the sensor within 1 m of the gateway, plug it in, scan its QR code. Repeat for each sensor.
  6. Mount each sensor to its target room ceiling.
  7. Run the calibration sequence per room.

Per-room calibration

  1. From the app, open the room and tap "Calibrate".
  2. Stand still in the room center for 10 seconds. The sensor records a "presence baseline".
  3. Walk slowly around the room edges for 30 seconds. The sensor records the "activity envelope".
  4. Sit on each piece of furniture you typically use, for 5 seconds each. The sensor records "rest signatures".
  5. Lie down briefly on any bed or sofa where you sleep or nap. The sensor records "sleep signatures".
  6. Confirm calibration. The app shows a live presence dot reflecting your position; verify it tracks you.

Test sequence to verify coverage

  1. Stand in each corner of the room for 5 seconds; verify the app dot updates.
  2. Sit on each piece of furniture; verify the activity changes from "moving" to "resting" within 10 seconds.
  3. Lie down on the bed; verify the activity changes to "sleeping" within 30 seconds and the room dot stays lit.
  4. Leave the room for 60 seconds; verify the room dot dims to "away".
  5. Optional: simulate a fall by sitting down on a soft surface very fast. The fall classifier may trigger; if it does, dismiss in the app.

Care home installer notes

  • One sensor per resident room. Plus optional common-area sensors.
  • One gateway per 30 sensors as a rough planning unit. A 40-room facility can run on two gateways.
  • Calibration time per room. 5 to 10 minutes for an installer who knows the procedure. Allow 30 minutes per room for the first install while staff are learning.
  • Staff training. Two-hour session covers dashboard, alert ladder, evidence bundle export. Schedule after sensor install but before go-live.

Troubleshooting

  • App shows "no signal" from a sensor. Check sensor LED. Solid green = healthy. Off = power issue. Blinking red = no gateway link; reposition closer to gateway or add a relay.
  • False fall alerts in living room. Likely a heavy sit-down event. Recalibrate furniture rest signatures.
  • Pet keeps lighting up the room. Pets over approximately 12 kg are above the noise threshold. Tune the pet-filter level in the app.
  • Bathroom sensor over-triggering on shower. Confirm the bathroom variant (5.8 GHz) is installed, not the primary (60 GHz). Primary sensors do not handle high water reflectivity well.
